✧ Mu'adh used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then he would come to his people and lead them in prayer. One night he came and prayed the 'atamah and recited al-Baqarah. A man from the Ansar came and prayed, then left. It reached him that Mu'adh was speaking ill of him, so he complained about that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Mu'adh: 'Are you a tempter? Are you a tempter? Are you a tempter?' or 'A tempter, a tempter, a tempter?' Then he ordered him to recite two surahs from the middle of the mufassal.

machine translationHe was asked about the ḥadīth of Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh from Muʿādh, that he used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and then leave and lead his people in that same prayer. He said: ʿAmr b. Dīnār narrates it, and there is disagreement about it from him. Al-Ḥasan b. Abī Jaʿfar narrated it from Ayyūb from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh, and Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī followed him, narrating it from Shuʿbah from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh. But the students of Shuʿbah and the students of Ayyūb contradicted them both, narrating it from them from ʿAmr from Jābir that Muʿādh [did so]. Likewise Manṣūr b. Zādhān, Warqāʾ and Muḥammad b. Muslim narrated it. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version is that it belongs to the musnad of Jābir.
