أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبَانَ أَخْبَرَنِي حَاتِمٌ هُوَ ابْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ عِيسَى عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قالَ

جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَقَالَ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ فِيهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ أَخْبِرْنِي أَنْتَ بِرَأْيِكَ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ هَذَا؟ أَخْبَرْتُهُ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَيَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ رَأْيِي وَدِينِي عِنْدِي آثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَاللَّهِ لَأَنْ أَتَعَنَّى بِعَنِيَّةٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُخْبِرَكَ بِرَأْيِي

Translation

✧ A man came to him asking about something, so he said, "Ibn Mas'ud used to say such and such about it." The man said, "Tell me your own opinion." He said, "Are you not amazed at this man? I told him from Ibn Mas'ud, and he asks me for my opinion. My religion is dearer to me than that. By Allah, to undergo hardship is more beloved to me than to inform you of my opinion."
