When the Prophet ﷺ set out for Ḥunayn, I went out as one of ten men from the people of Mecca, searching for them. He said: We heard them calling the adhān for the prayer, so we stood up calling the adhān, mocking them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I have heard among these people the call of a man with a beautiful voice." So he sent for us, and we all called the adhān, one man after another, and I was the last of them. When I had called the adhān he said: "Come." He made me sit in front of him, wiped over my forehead and blessed me three times. Then he said: "Go and call the adhān at the House." I said: How, O Messenger of Allah? He said: So he taught me the adhān as it is called now: Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to the prayer, come to the prayer. Come to success, come to success. Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep, in the first call of the dawn prayer. Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar. There is no god but Allah. He said: And he taught me the iqāmah in pairs: Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to the prayer, come to success. The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun. Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar. There is no god but Allah.
