Maṣqalah said to him: "Because I left ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, peace be upon him, among the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār and the leading men of the people of Iraq, and joined Muʿāwiyah, and struck with my sword alongside him. And ʿAlī had appointed me over Bahrain, and I freed for him the Banū Sāmah b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib after their necks had been enslaved and their sanctity had been made lawful. And you stayed in al-Ṭāʾif, cooing to your women and grooming your children, long of tongue and short of hand, casting affection from a distant place, until when matters became settled, you overcame us with a conquest." Al-Mughīrah said to him: "By God, Maṣqalah, all day you have been cutting deep and missing the joints. As for your leaving ʿAlī, you did so, yet you gave no comfort to the people of Syria and caused no desolation to the people of Iraq. As for what you said about the freeing of the Banū Sāmah b. Luʾayy, it was only ʿAlī's trust in you, may God be pleased with him, that freed them. Indeed, by God, you did not restrain yourself for them, nor did you free them from your own wealth. As for my staying in al-Ṭāʾif, God Almighty tested me in ease with what He did not test you with in travel, and to God Almighty belongs the due upon us. So if you take us as enemies, then God, Mighty and Majestic, is behind you." 28 The Book of Drinks and other matters
