✧ There was a black man who used to come to Abu Bakr, and he would draw him near and teach him the Qur'an, until he sent out a tax collector—or he said an expedition—and the man said, 'Send me with him.' He said, 'Rather, stay with us.' But he refused, so he sent him with him and enjoined him to treat him well. Only a little while passed before he came back with his hand cut off. When Abu Bakr saw him, his eyes overflowed. He said, 'What happened to you?' He said, 'I did nothing more than that he entrusted me with something of his work, and I betrayed him in a single obligatory duty, so he cut off my hands.' Abu Bakr said, 'Do you find that the one who cut this off betrays more than twenty obligatory duties? By Allah, if you are truthful, I will surely exact retribution for you from him.' He said, 'Then he drew him near and did not change the position he had with him.' He said, 'The man would stand at night reciting, and when Abu Bakr heard his voice, he would say, "By Allah, a man whose hand was cut off is this."' He said, 'Only a little while passed before the family of Abu Bakr missed jewelry and goods of theirs. Abu Bakr said, "The neighborhood was raided tonight." The one-armed man stood up, faced the qiblah, and raised his healthy hand and the other that had been cut off, and said, "O Allah, expose against me the one who stole from them," or something like this. Ma'mar sometimes said, "O Allah, expose against me the one who stole from the people of this righteous household."' He said, 'Barely half the day had passed before they found the goods with him. Abu Bakr said to him, "Woe to you! You have little knowledge of Allah." So he ordered that his leg be cut off.'
