✧ A man with a severed hand and foot stayed with Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, and he used to pray at night. He said: Abū Bakr said to him, “Your night is not the night of a thief. Who cut you?” He said, “Ya‘lā b. Umayyah, unjustly.” He said: Abū Bakr said to him, “I will write to him,” and he threatened him. While they were thus, they missed some jewelry belonging to Asmā’ bt. ‘Umays. He said: He began to say, “O Allah, expose to me its possessor.” He said: It was found with a goldsmith, and he was pressed until he was forced to point to the one with the severed limbs. Abū Bakr said, “By Allah, his deception of Allah is more severe to me than what he did. Cut off his foot.” ‘Umar said, “Rather, we cut off his hand, as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said.” He said, “Do it.”
