A slave woman among the Banū Sāʿidah became pregnant by fornication. When she gave birth, she was asked, "By whom is your child?" She said, "By so-and-so," a frail, wasted man, as though he were a thing of dried-up refuse from his weakness. The crippled man was asked about that and said, "She has spoken the truth; it is from me." So that was reported to the Prophet ﷺ along with what he had said, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of the man's condition and that there was no strength in him to strike. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Take for him a ʿuthkūl," meaning a palm-cluster bearing a hundred small branches, "and strike him with it one single blow." And they did so.
