Chain of narrators
- Abū Bakr al-Naysābūrī
- Muḥammad b. Yaḥyá b. Fāris and ʾAḥmad b. Manṣūr b. Rāshid Waʿalī b. Ḥarb
- Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd
- ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar
- ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb
- his father
✧ A man came to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr asking him about a pilgrim in ihram who had intercourse with a woman. He pointed to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar and said, “Go to that one and ask him.” Shuʿayb said: The man did not recognize him, so I went with him. He asked Ibn ʿUmar, who said, “Your Hajj is invalidated.” The man said, “Should I then stay put?” He said, “Rather, you go out with the people and do what they do. When the next year comes, perform Hajj and offer a sacrifice.” He returned to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr and informed him. Then he told him, “Go to Ibn ʿAbbas and ask him.” Shuʿayb said: I went with him, and he asked him, and he said to him the like of what ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar had said. He returned to ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr and informed him of what Ibn ʿAbbas had said. Then he said, “What do you say?” He said, “I say the like of what they both said.”

- Dāraquṭnī
machine translationHis nearest grandfather is Muḥammad, who did not meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; his furthest grandfather is ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, whom Shuʿayb did not meet; and his middle grandfather is ʿAbdullāh, who did meet him. So if he does not name his grandfather, it is possible that it is Muḥammad and possible that it is ʿAmr, in which case the hadith would be in both cases disconnected (mursal); and it is possible that it is ʿAbdullāh, whom he met, in which case the hadith would not be sound (ṣaḥīḥ) and would be free of disconnection (irsāl) only if he says: "from his grandfather ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr."

in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3007 - Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
machine translationIts chain is sound (ṣaḥīḥ), and it indicates the soundness of Shuʿayb's hearing from his grandfather ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr and from Ibn ʿAbbās.
