Abū ʿAyyāsh asked Saʿd about [exchanging] wheat (al-bayḍāʾ) for barley (al-sult), and he disliked it. Saʿd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade [exchanging] dried dates for fresh dates, and he said about it: "When it dries, it decreases."

  • Khaṭṭābī

machine translationSome people have spoken about the chain of this hadith and said: Zayd Abū ʿAyyāsh is unknown (majhūl), and a chain like this, according to the principle of al-Shāfiʿī, is not to be used as evidence. But the matter is not as he imagined, for this Abū ʿAyyāsh is a well-known freed slave (mawlā) of Banū Zuhrah, and Mālik mentioned him in the Muwaṭṭaʾ, and Mālik does not narrate from a man whose hadith is abandoned (matrūk) in any way. This is Mālik's way and his habit.
