machine translationHis statement, "The ḥadīth is well known and the Companions acted upon it": as for its being well known, it is not meant in the technical sense, but he means its fame among the people. As for the Companions acting upon it, that is not established from any of them. Al-Dāraquṭnī reported it through two weak routes from ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him, and through another route weaker than both from Ibn ʿAbbās.

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Abū Rāfiʿ from Ibn Masʿūd from the Prophet ﷺ regarding ablution with nabīdh. He said: Abū Saʿīd, the freed slave of Banū Hāshim, narrates it from Ḥammād b. Salamah from ʿAlī b. Zayd from Abū Rāfiʿ from Ibn Masʿūd, and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Razmah corroborated him. This hadith is not established, because it is not in the compiled books of Ḥammād b. Salamah, ʿAlī b. Zayd is weak (ḍaʿīf), and Abū Rāfiʿ's hearing from Ibn Masʿūd is not established. It is also narrated from al-Aʿmash from Abū Wāʾil from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, but its narrator is abandoned in hadith (matrūk al-ḥadīth), namely al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUbaydullāh al-ʿIjlī, from Abū Muʿāwiyah; he used to fabricate hadiths against trustworthy narrators, and this is a lie against Abū Muʿāwiyah and against al-Aʿmash. It is also narrated from Ibn Lahīʿah from Qays b. al-Ḥajjāj from Ḥanash al-Ṣanʿānī from Ibn ʿAbbās from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, and it is not established; Ibn Lahīʿah is not to be relied upon as evidence. Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh narrated it from Abū Isḥāq from al-Ḥārith from ʿAlī as his own statement, and Ḥajjāj is not to be relied upon as evidence. The sound report is what is narrated from Ibn Masʿūd, that he was not present with the Prophet ﷺ on the Night of the Jinn, and God knows best. Ḥasan b. Qutaybah narrated it from Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq from Abū Isḥāq from Abū ʿUbaydah and Abū al-Aḥwaṣ from ʿAbdullāh from the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Ḥasan b. Qutaybah is abandoned in hadith (matrūk al-ḥadīth), and the one who narrates it from him is Ibn Ḥayyān al-Madāʾinī, who is weak (ḍaʿīf), and God knows best.
