ʿUmar came out to his companions and said: "What do you think of something I did today? I woke up fasting, then a slave girl passed by me and she pleased me, so I had relations with her." The people considered what he had done a grave matter, while ʿAlī ؓ was silent. So he said: "What do you say?" He said: "You did something lawful, and a day makes up for a day." He said: "You are the best of them in giving legal rulings."
