What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIn its chain of transmission is al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1971
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThis hadith is only narrated through this route, and there is some criticism (maqāl) of its chain, because al-Muthannā is regarded as weak (yuḍaʿʿaf) in hadith.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1971
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim narrated it from Makḥūl, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, from ʿUmar, as his own statement. ʿAmr b. Dīnār differed with him, and there is disagreement about what was reported from him. Ibn ʿUyaynah said, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from ʿUmar, without mentioning Ibn al-Musayyib. Ḥammād b. Zayd differed with him and narrated it from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from Makḥūl, from ʿUmar, without mentioning ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb or Ibn al-Musayyib. Al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. Likewise Mindal b. ʿAlī narrated it from al-Shaybānī, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. The report of ʿUmar is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
