A caravan carrying food, until they halted at al-Baqīʿ. They turned to it and dispersed toward it, and left the Messenger of God ﷺ with no one but forty men, I being one of them. So God sent down upon the Prophet ﷺ: {وَإِذَا رَأَوْا تِجَارَةً أَوْ لَهْوًا انْفَضُّوا إِلَيْهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَائِمًا} (al-Jumuʿah 11). No one said in this chain "except forty men" other than ʿAlī b. ʿĀṣim, from Ḥuṣayn; and the companions of Ḥuṣayn contradicted him, saying: There remained with the Prophet ﷺ only twelve men.
