machine translationI asked my father about the hadith of Aws b. Ḍamʿaj, from Abū Masʿūd, from the Prophet ﷺ. He said: They differed regarding its text. Fiṭr and al-Aʿmash narrated it from Ismāʿīl b. Rajāʾ, from Aws b. Ḍamʿaj, from Abū Masʿūd, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The people are led in prayer by the one who recites the Book of God best. If they are equal in recitation, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah." Shuʿbah and al-Masʿūdī narrated it from Ismāʿīl b. Rajāʾ and did not say "the most knowledgeable of the Sunnah". My father said: Shuʿbah used to say, "Ismāʿīl b. Rajāʾ is as if he were a devil because of the excellence of his hadith." He used to be wary of this hadith, saying: it is a ruling among the rulings from the Messenger of God ﷺ in which no one else shared. My father said: Shuʿbah is a better memorizer than all of them. Abū Muḥammad said: Did not al-Suddī also narrate it from Aws b. Ḍamʿaj? He said: Only al-Ḥasan b. Yazīd al-Aṣamm narrated it from al-Suddī, and he is an obscure shaykh. Where were al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah regarding this hadith? I fear that it is not preserved (maḥfūẓ).

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIts transmission revolves around Ismāʿīl b. Rajāʾ, from Aws b. Ḍamʿaj, from him. Neither of the two meets the condition of al-Bukhārī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim reported in al-ʿIlal from his father that Shuʿbah used to withhold judgement on the authenticity of this hadith. However, in general it is suitable to be used as evidence according to al-Bukhārī.
