Umar ᴿᴬ set out with the Prophet ﷺ among a group toward Ibn Sayyad. They found him playing with the boys near the fortified tower of Banu Maghalah. Ibn Sayyad was nearing puberty and did not notice them until the Prophet ﷺ struck him with his hand. He then said to Ibn Sayyad, "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" Ibn Sayyad looked at him and said, "I testify that you are the messenger of the unlettered." Ibn Sayyad then said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Do you testify that I am the messenger of Allah?" He rejected his claim and said, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." He then asked him, "What do you see?" Ibn Sayyad replied, "One who speaks truthfully and one who lies come to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "The matter has been confused for you." The Prophet ﷺ then said to him, "I have concealed something for you." Ibn Sayyad said, "It is al-dukhkh." He said, "Be disgraced! You will never exceed your station." Umar ᴿᴬ said, "Let me strike his neck, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If he is the one, you will never be given power over him; and if he is not, there is no good for you in killing him." Salim said: I heard Ibn Umar ᴿᴬ say, "After that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Ubayy ibn Kab set out toward the palm grove where Ibn Sayyad was. He was trying to hear something from Ibn Sayyad before Ibn Sayyad saw him. The Prophet ﷺ saw him lying down, wrapped in a velvet cloak of his from which a faint sound or murmur could be heard. Ibn Sayyad's mother saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concealing himself behind the palm trunks, so she said to Ibn Sayyad, 'O Saf—and that was Ibn Sayyad's name—this is Muhammad ﷺ.' Ibn Sayyad sprang up, and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Had she left him, he would have made it clear.'"
