✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two evening prayers. He prayed two rak'ahs, then said the salam, then stood by a piece of wood placed across the mosque. He placed his hand on it - and Ibn Awn described that he placed one of his hands over the other, and placed his hand on it as if he were angry. Then the hasteners among the people hurried out of the doors of the mosque, saying: The prayer has been shortened. Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they were too awed by him to speak to him. Among the people was a man with long hands called Dhu'l-Yadayn. He said: O Messenger of Allah, was the prayer shortened or did you forget? He said: I did not forget, nor was it shortened. He said: Is it as Dhu'l-Yadayn says? They said: Yes. So he went back and prayed what he had omitted, then said the salam, then said the takbir and prostrated like his prostration or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir, then prostrated.

- Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
