✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a horse, which made every stride cover the farthest extent of his sight. He traveled, and Jibrīl ﷺ traveled with him. He came upon a people who sowed in a day and harvested in a day; whenever they harvested, it returned as it was. He said: “O Jibrīl, who are these?” He said: “These are the mujāhidūn in the cause of Allah; a good deed is multiplied for them by seven hundred times, and whatever they spend, He replaces it.” Then he came upon a people whose heads were being crushed with rocks; whenever they were crushed, they returned as they were, and nothing of that ceased for them. He said: “O Jibrīl, who are these?” He said: “These are those whose heads were too heavy for the prayer.” Then he came upon a people with patches on their backs and patches on their fronts, being herded as cattle are herded to ḍarīʿ, zaqqūm, and the hot stones of Hell. He said: “Who are these, O Jibrīl?” He said: “These are those who do not pay the zakāh of their wealth. Allah did not wrong them; Allah is not unjust to His servants.” Then he came upon a people with cooked meat in a pot before them, good and delicious, and another raw, foul meat. They ate the foul meat and left the cooked, good meat. He said: “O Jibrīl, who are these?” He said: “This is the man from your community who leaves his wife lawfully and comes to a wicked woman and spends the night with her until morning; and the woman who leaves her husband lawfully and good and comes to a wicked man and spends the night with him until morning.” Then he came upon a man who had gathered a huge bundle which he could not carry, and he wanted to add more to it. He said: “O Jibrīl, who is this?” He said: “This is the man from your community upon whom rests the trust of the people; he cannot fulfill it, and he adds to it.” Then he came upon a people whose lips and tongues were being cut with iron scissors; whenever they were cut, they returned as they were, and nothing of that ceased for them. He said: “O Jibrīl, who are these?” He said: “The orators of fitnah.” Then he came upon a small rock from which emerged a huge bull. The bull tried to enter from where it came out but could not. He said: “What is this, O Jibrīl?” He said: “This is the man who speaks a great word and regrets it, and wants to take it back but cannot.” Then he came upon a valley and found a pleasant scent and the scent of musk with a voice. He said: “What is this?” He said: “The voice of Paradise, saying: ‘O Lord, bring me my people and what You promised me. My plants have become many, and my silk, my fine silk, my brocade, my carpets, my coral, my silver, my gold, my cups, my plates, my pitchers, my fruits, my honey, my garments, my milk, my wine. Bring me what You promised me.’ He said: ‘For you is every Muslim man and Muslim woman, every believer man and believer woman, and whoever believes in Me and My messengers, does righteous deeds, and does not associate anything with Me, and does not take equals besides Me, he is secure. Whoever asks Me, I give him; whoever lends Me, I repay him; whoever relies on Me, I suffice him. Indeed I am Allah; there is no god but I; My promise is never broken. The believers have succeeded. Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.’ She said: ‘I am pleased.’ Then he came upon a valley and heard a dreadful voice. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, what is this voice?’ He said: ‘This is the voice of Hell, saying: ‘O Lord, bring me my people and what You promised me. My chains have become many, and my shackles, my blazing fire, my boiling water, my ghassāq, my ghislin. My depth has become far and my heat intense. Bring me what You promised me.’ He said: ‘For you is every polytheist man and polytheist woman, every wicked man and wicked woman, and every tyrant who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.’ She said: ‘I am pleased.’ Then he traveled until he came to Jerusalem and dismounted. He tied his horse to a rock and prayed with the angels. When the prayer ended, they said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this with you?’ He said: ‘This is Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, the Seal of the Prophets.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor.’ Then they met the souls of the prophets, and they praised their Lord. Ibrāhīm ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, the One who took me as a friend, gave me a great kingdom, made me a devout nation, chose me for His messages, and saved me from the fire, and made it coolness and peace for me.’ Then Mūsā (peace and blessings be upon him) praised his Lord and said: ‘Praise be to Allah who spoke to me directly, chose me, sent down the Torah to me, made the destruction of the people of Pharaoh at my hand, and the deliverance of the Children of Israel at my hand.’ Then Dāwūd ﷺ praised his Lord and said: ‘Praise be to Allah who gave me a kingdom, sent down the Zabūr to me, made iron soft for me, subjected the mountains to glorify with me and the birds, and gave me wisdom and decisive speech.’ Then Sulaymān praised his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, and said: ‘Praise be to Allah who subjected the winds to me, the jinn and mankind, and subjected the devils to me working whatever I wished of sanctuaries, statues, basins like reservoirs, and fixed cauldrons; and taught me the language of the birds, made a spring of molten copper flow for me, and gave me a kingdom that is not fitting for anyone after me.’ Then ʿĪsā ﷺ praised his Lord and said: ‘Praise be to Allah who taught me the Torah and the Injīl, made me heal the blind and the leper, raise the dead by His permission, raised me and purified me from those who disbelieved, and protected me and my mother from the accursed Satan, so Satan had no way over us.’ And Muḥammad ﷺ praised his Lord and said: ‘All of you have praised your Lord, and I praise my Lord. Praise be to Allah who sent me as a mercy to the worlds and to all people, as a bearer of good tidings and a warner; sent down to me the Furqān, in which is an explanation of everything; made my community the best community brought forth for mankind; made my community a middle community; made my community the first and the last; expanded my breast; removed my burden; raised my mention; and made me an opener and a seal.’ Ibrāhīm ﷺ said: ‘By this Muḥammad ﷺ has surpassed you.’ Then three covered vessels were brought. A vessel was handed to him, and it was said to him: ‘Drink; it contains water.’ Then another vessel was handed to him containing milk, and he drank from it until he was quenched. Then another vessel was handed to him containing wine, and he said: ‘I have drunk enough; I will not taste it.’ It was said to him: ‘You have done right. Indeed it will be forbidden to your community. If you had drunk it, only a few of your community would have followed you.’ Then he ascended to the heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. It was said: ‘Who is this?’ He said: ‘Jibrīl.’ It was said: ‘And who is with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ He entered, and there was a seated old man, perfect in form, with nothing lacking from his form as it lacks from human forms. On his right was a door from which a pleasant scent emerged, and on his left a door from which a foul scent emerged. When he looked at the door on his right, he laughed, and when he looked at the door on his left, he wept and grieved. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this old man, and what are these two doors?’ He said: ‘This is your father Ādam. The door on his right is the door of Paradise; when he sees one of his descendants entering it, he laughs and rejoices. When he looks at the door on his left, the door of Hell, at one of his descendants entering it, he weeps and grieves.’ Then he ascended to the second heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. It was said: ‘Who is this?’ He said: ‘Jibrīl.’ They said: ‘And who is with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ He entered, and there were two young men. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who are these two young men?’ He said: ‘This is ʿĪsā and Yaḥyā, the two sons of maternal aunts.’ Then he ascended to the third heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. They said: ‘Who is this with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ He entered, and there was a man who had been favored over people in beauty as the full moon is favored over the other stars. He said: ‘Who is this, O Jibrīl?’ He said: ‘Your brother Yūsuf ﷺ.’ Then he ascended to the fourth heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. They said: ‘Who is this with you?’ He said: ‘This is Muḥammad ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ He entered, and there was a man. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this seated man?’ He said: ‘This is your brother Idrīs; Allah raised him to a high place.’ Then he ascended to the fifth heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. They said to him: ‘Who is this with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ There was a seated man narrating to them. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this, and who are these around him?’ He said: ‘This is Hārūn ﷺ, left behind among his people, and these around him are his people from the Children of Israel.’ Then he ascended to the sixth heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. They said: ‘Who is this with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ There was a seated man, and he passed by him, and the man wept. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this?’ He said: ‘This is Mūsā ﷺ.’ He said: ‘What makes him weep?’ He said: ‘The Children of Israel claim that I am the best of creation, and this one has succeeded me. If it were only him alone, but with him is his entire community.’ Then he ascended to the seventh heaven, and Jibrīl asked for it to be opened. They said: ‘Who is with you?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Has he been sent to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘May Allah greet him as a brother and successor; what an excellent brother and what an excellent successor, and what an excellent coming has come.’ There was a gray-haired man seated on a chair at the door of Paradise, and with him were people sitting with something in their colors – ʿĪsā, meaning Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, said: And I heard him once say: ‘black-faced’ – so those who had something in their colors stood up and entered a river called ‘the Blessing of Allah,’ bathed in it, and came out with some of the color gone from them. Then they entered another river called ‘the Mercy of Allah,’ bathed in it, and came out with some of the color gone from them. Then they entered another river, and that is His saying: ‘And their Lord gave them a purifying drink,’ and they came out with their colors purified like the colors of their companions, and they sat with their companions. He said: ‘O Jibrīl, who is this gray-haired seated man? And who are these white-faced ones? And what are these who had something in their colors, who entered these rivers and bathed in them, then came out with their colors purified?’ He said: ‘This is your father Ibrāhīm ﷺ, the first to have gray hair on earth. These white-faced people are a people who did not mix their faith with wrongdoing. And these who had something in their colors mixed righteous deeds with bad ones; they repented, and Allah accepted their repentance.’ Then he went on to the Lote Tree. It was said to him: ‘This is the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary; every one of your community who passes on your path ends here. It is the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, from whose roots flow rivers of water that does not become stagnant, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey. It is a tree in whose shade a rider travels for seventy years, and a leaf of it shades the creation. Light covered it, and the angels covered it’ – ʿĪsā said: ‘That is His saying: “When the Lote Tree was covered with what covered it.”’ Then He, Blessed and Exalted, said to him: ‘Ask.’ He said: ‘You took Ibrāhīm as a friend, gave him a great kingdom, spoke to Mūsā directly, gave Dāwūd a great kingdom, made iron soft for him, subjected the mountains to him, gave Sulaymān a great kingdom, subjected the jinn, mankind, devils, and winds to him, gave him a kingdom not fitting for anyone after him, taught ʿĪsā the Torah and the Injīl, made him heal the blind and the leper, and protected him and his mother from the accursed Satan, so he had no way over them.’ His Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said to him: ‘I have taken you as a friend. It is written in the Torah: Muḥammad is the beloved of the Most Merciful. I have sent you to all people, made your community the first and the last, made your community such that no sermon is valid for them until they testify that you are My servant and messenger, made you the first of the prophets in creation and the last of them in sending, given you the seven oft-repeated verses which I did not give to any prophet before you, and given you the closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne which I did not give to any prophet before you, and made you an opener and a seal.’ And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘My Lord, Blessed and Exalted, favored me with six things: He cast terror into the hearts of my enemy at a distance of a month’s journey; He made booty lawful for me, and it was not lawful for anyone before me; the earth was made a mosque and a means of purification for me; I was given the openings of speech and its comprehensive words; my community was shown to me, and the follower and the followed among them were not hidden from me; I saw them coming upon a people who wear hair sandals, and I saw them coming upon a people with broad faces and small eyes, and I recognized what they were; and I was commanded with fifty prayers.’ So he returned to Mūsā, and Mūsā said to him: ‘With how many prayers were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Fifty prayers.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ So Muḥammad ﷺ returned and asked Allah for reduction, and He removed ten from him. He returned to Mūsā, and he said to him: ‘With how many were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Forty prayers.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ So Muḥammad ﷺ returned and asked Him for reduction, and He removed ten from him. He returned to Mūsā, and he said to him: ‘With how many were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Thirty.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ So Muḥammad returned and asked his Lord for reduction, and He removed ten from him. He returned to Mūsā, and he said to him: ‘With how many were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Twenty.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ So he returned and asked his Lord for reduction, and He removed ten from him. He returned to Mūsā, and he said to him: ‘With how many were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Ten.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ So Muḥammad returned and asked his Lord for reduction, and He removed five from him. He returned to Mūsā, and he said to him: ‘With how many were you commanded?’ He said: ‘Five.’ He said: ‘Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction, for your community is the weakest of communities, and I encountered severity from the Children of Israel.’ He said: ‘I have returned to my Lord until I felt ashamed, and I will not return to Him.’ It was said to him: ‘As you have been patient with the five, it will count for you as fifty; every good deed is multiplied tenfold.’ ʿĪsā said: ‘It reached me that the Prophet ﷺ said: Mūsā ﷺ was the harshest of them to me at first and the best of them at last.’ And this hadith we do not know is narrated except with this isnad from this way.
