✧ A delegation came to Muʿāwiyah, may Allah have mercy on him, and I was among them, along with Abū Hurayrah, and that was in Ramaḍān. Some of us would prepare food for the others, and Abū Hurayrah was among those who did so often and would invite to his camp. I said: 'Why don't I prepare food and then invite them to my camp?' He said: Then I met Abū Hurayrah after the evening prayer. I said: 'The invitation is with me tonight.' He said: 'You beat me to it?' I said: 'Yes.' So I invited them and they are with me. Abū Hurayrah said: 'Shall I not inform you of a ḥadīth of yours, O assembly of the Anṣār?' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came until he entered Makkah. He sent al-Zubayr over one of the two flanks, and sent Khālid b. al-Walīd over the other flank, and sent Abū ʿUbaydah over the infantry without armor—those who had no equipment. Quraysh had gathered their rabble and their followers. They said: 'We will send these forward; if they succeed, we will be with them; and if they are struck down, we will give what is asked.' They took the bottom of the valley, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a battalion. He looked and saw me, and said: 'O Abū Hurayrah.' I said: 'At your service, Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Do you see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers?' Then he said: 'Call out to the Anṣār, and let none come to me except an Anṣārī.' So he called them, and they came until they surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: 'Do you see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers?' Then he gestured with one hand over the other: 'Mow them down like harvest until you meet me at al-Ṣafā.' Abū Hurayrah said: We set off, and it was not the desire of any of us to kill whom he wished among them but he did so. Abū Sufyān came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the virgin daughter of Quraysh has been violated, or you have made lawful the green of Quraysh; there is no Quraysh after today.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe.' He said: So the people closed their doors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came until he reached the Black Stone and touched it, then circumambulated the House with a bow in his hand, holding the upper end of the bow. He came upon an idol beside the House and began thrusting it in its eye, saying: 'Truth has come and falsehood has vanished.' Then he went on until he came to al-Ṣafā where he could see the House. He raised his hands and began praising Allah and supplicating, while the Anṣār were below him, saying to one another: 'As for the man, desire for his people and compassion for his clan have overcome him.' He said: Abū Hurayrah said: Then revelation came, and when it came, it did not remain hidden from them. No one raised his gaze to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the revelation was finished. When the revelation was finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O assembly of the Anṣār, did you say: As for the man, desire for his kin and compassion for his clan have overcome him?' They said: 'We did say that.' He said: 'Not at all. I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger. I emigrated to Allah and to you. The living is your living, and the dying is your dying.' They came to him weeping and saying: 'By Allah, we only said what we said out of concern for Allah and His Messenger.' He said: 'Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you.'
