✧ When Abu Bakr ؓ died, they shrouded him in a cloth, and Madinah shook with weeping, and the people were stunned as on the day the Messenger of God ﷺ was taken. 'Ali b. Abi Talib came hastening, saying 'Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we return,' and he said: 'Today the succession of prophethood has been cut off.' He stood at the door of the house where Abu Bakr was and said: 'May God have mercy on you, Abu Bakr. You were the first of the people in Islam, the most sincere of them in faith, the strongest of them in certainty, the most fearful of them of God, the greatest of them in support, the most protective of them toward His Messenger, the most affectionate of them toward Islam, the most trustworthy of them over his companions, the best of them in companionship, the most excellent of them in virtues, the most numerous of them in precedents, the highest of them in rank, the closest of them to his Messenger, the most similar to him in guidance, character, and demeanor, the most reliable of them in his sight, the most honorable of them in station, and the most noble of them to him. May God reward you well on behalf of Islam, His Messenger, and the Muslims. You believed the Messenger of God when the people denied him, so He named you in His Book al-Siddiq, saying: "And the one who brought the truth—Muhammad—and the one who believed in it—Abu Bakr." You supported him when they were miserly, you stood with him when they sat back, and you accompanied him in hardship with the noblest companionship. The one on whom tranquility descended was your companion in the emigration and in the places of distress. You succeeded him in his community with the best succession when the people apostatized, and you upheld God's religion with a stand that no successor of a prophet ever did. You were strong when your companions were weak, you rose when they faltered, and you adhered to the paths of his Messenger despite the spite of the hypocrites and the rage of the disbelievers. You undertook the affair when they failed, with God's light when they halted. You were the highest of them in elevation, the least of them in speech, the most correct of them in expression, the longest of them in silence, the most eloquent of them in words, the greatest of them in judgment, the bravest of them in heart, the strongest of them in certainty, the best of them in deeds, and the most knowledgeable of them in affairs. You were a chief for the religion, and you were a merciful father to the believers when they became dependent on you, so you carried the burdens they were too weak to bear, you preserved what they neglected, you tended what they abandoned, and you were patient when they despaired. Thus you attained the traces of what they sought, and through you they obtained what they had not expected. You were upon the disbelievers a pouring punishment, and for the Muslims rain and abundance. You were created with its richness, you dwelt in its protection, you attained its virtues, and you secured its precedents. Your argument did not diminish, your heart did not deviate, your insight did not weaken, and your soul did not falter. You were like a mountain that storms could not move and gales could not dislodge. You were as the Messenger of God ﷺ said: the most gracious of people to him in your companionship and your wealth, and as he said: weak in body, strong in the affair of God, humble, great in the sight of the Muslims, majestic on earth. No one had any fault to find in you, no speaker any criticism, no one any hope of favoritism, nor did you show leniency to anyone. The weak and abased were strong in your eyes until you secured their rights; the strong and mighty were abased and weak in your eyes until the right was taken from them; the near and the far were equal to you in that. Your concern was truth, sincerity, and gentleness. Your word was decisive, and the path was made clear, and by you the religion was set aright, faith was strengthened, and God's command prevailed, even if the disbelievers disliked it. By God, you raced ahead with a far-reaching lead, and you exhausted those after you with great exhaustion. You have attained Paradise, and your loss was magnified in heaven, and your calamity shook creation. Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we return. We are content with God's decree and submit to His command. The Muslims will never be afflicted after the Messenger of God ﷺ with the like of you. You were for the religion a provision and a refuge, for the Muslims a fortress, a support, and a comfort, and upon the hypocrites harshness and wrath. May God join you with your Prophet, and may He not deprive us of your reward, and may He not lead us astray after you.' He said: The people were silent until he finished his speech, then the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ wept and said: 'You have spoken the truth, O cousin of the Messenger of God ﷺ.'
