حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ، قَالَا: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ: نَا شُرَحْبِيلُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ الْجُعْفِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ
أَنَّهُ سَافَرَ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ وَكَانَ صَاحِبَ مِطْهَرَتِهِ فَلَمَّا حَاذَى بِنِينَوَى وَهُوَ مُنْطَلِقٌ إِلَى صِفِّينَ فَنَادَى عَلِيٌّ: صَبْرًا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ، فَقُلْتُ: وَمَاذَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: إِنِّي دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَعَيْنَاهُ تَفِيضَانِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ أَغْضَبَكَ أَحَدٌ، مَا شَأْنُ عَيْنَيْكَ تَفِيضَانِ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى قَامَ مِنْ عِنْدِي جِبْرِيلُ فَحَدَّثَنِي أَنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ يُقْتَلُ بِشَطِّ الْفُرَاتِ قَالَ: هَلْ لَكَ أَنْ أُشِمَّكَ مِنْ تُرْبَتِهِ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَمَدَّ يَدَهُ فَقَبَضَ قَبْضَةً مِنْ تُرَابٍ فَلَمْ أَمْلِكْ عَيْنَيَّ أَنْ فَاضَتَا

✧ He traveled with 'Ali and was in charge of his water container. When he came parallel to Nineveh while heading to Siffin, 'Ali called out, 'Patience, Abu 'Abdullah.' I said, 'What is it, Abu 'Abdullah?' He said, 'I entered upon the Messenger of Allah one day while his eyes were flowing with tears. I said, "O Prophet of Allah, has someone angered you? What is the matter with your eyes flowing?" He said, "Yes, Jibril left me and told me that al-Husayn will be killed on the bank of the Euphrates." He said, "Would you like me to let you smell some of his soil?" I said, "Yes." He extended his hand and grasped a handful of soil. I could not control my eyes from overflowing.'
