✧ People's gatherings were the mosques until they returned from Siffin and disavowed the arbitration. Then people became careless and sat in the streets exchanging news. While we were sitting with 'Ali, who was discussing a matter concerning the people, a man stood up over him and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, permit me to speak.' He said: He was preoccupied with the people's affair. The man was brought and seated among us, and we asked, 'What is this you wanted to ask the Commander of the Faithful about?' He said, 'I was on 'umrah and entered upon the Mother of the Faithful 'A'ishah. She said, "What are these people who went out near you, called Harura'?" I said, "A people who went out to a land near us called Harura'."' He said, 'You witnessed their destruction.' 'Asim said: I do not know whether the man said yes or no. 'A'ishah said, 'Indeed, if the son of Abu Talib had wished, he would have told you their story.' So I came to ask him about that. When 'Ali finished what he was doing, he said, 'Where is the man who sought permission?' He stood and recounted to him what he had told us. 'Ali raised his voice in talbiyah and takbir and said, 'I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when no one was with him but 'A'ishah. He said, "How will you be, O son of Abu Talib, and a people of such and such?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He repeated it, and I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "A people who will come out from the east, reciting the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their collarbones. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through the game. Among them is a man with a defective hand, as if his hand is a breast." He said, "I adjure you by Allah, did I tell you that he is among them, and you came to me saying he is not among them, then you brought him dragging him?" They said, "Yes." Then 'Ali raised his voice in talbiyah and takbir.'
