✧ By Him who split the grain and created the soul, this [beard] shall surely be dyed from this [head] — from his head to his beard — and the most wretched of them shall not be restrained. 'Abdullah b. Subay' said, 'By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, if a man did that, we would annihilate his family.' He said: He said, 'I adjure you by Allah not to kill anyone but my killer for me.' They said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, will you not appoint a successor over us?' He said, 'No, but I leave you as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left you.' [Someone] said, 'Then what will you say to your Lord when you come to Him, having left us neglected?' He said, 'I will say: You appointed me over them as long as You willed, then You took me, and I left You among them.'
