حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: نَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ: نَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُمَرَ - قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ:

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَكْرَمِ النَّاسِ ؟ قَالَ: أَتْقَاهُمْ لِلهِ، قَالُوا: لَيْسَ عَنْ هَذَا نَسْأَلُكَ، قَالَ: فَعَنْ مَعَادِنِ الْعَرَبِ تَسْأَلُونَ ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَإِنَّ خِيَارَكُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُكُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقُهُوا

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ was asked about the noblest of people. He said: 'The most God-fearing of them.' They said: 'It is not about this that we ask you.' He said: 'Then is it about the origins of the Arabs that you ask?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The best of you in the time of ignorance are the best of you in Islam, if they gain understanding.'
