أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ حَبِيبِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الرَّقِّيُّ قَالَ: نَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَزَّارُ قَالَ: نَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُمَرَ - عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ:

قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَنْ أَكْرَمُ النَّاسِ ؟ قَالَ: أَتْقَاهُمْ. قَالُوا: لَيْسَ عَنْ هَذَا نَسْأَلُكَ قَالَ: فَعَنْ مَعَادِنِ الْعَرَبِ تَسْأَلُونَ، خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقُهُوا

✧ It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who is the most noble of people?' He said: 'The most God-fearing of them.' They said: 'We are not asking you about this.' He said: 'Then you are asking about the origins of the Arabs? The best of them in the Jahiliyyah are the best of them in Islam, if they acquire understanding.'
