✧ That the Prophet ﷺ intended to go on an expedition, so he called Ja'far and ordered him to remain behind in Madinah. Ja'far said, 'I will never remain behind after you.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent for me and adjured me to remain before I could speak, and I wept. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'What makes you weep?' I said, 'More than one thing makes me weep. Tomorrow the Quraysh will say, "How quickly he remained behind his cousin and abandoned him!" Another thing that makes me weep is that I wanted to seek fighting in the path of God, because God, mighty and sublime, says: "Nor do they tread any ground that angers the disbelievers or achieve any gain from an enemy except that a righteous deed is written for them thereby; indeed, God does not waste the reward of the doers of good." So I wanted to seek the reward. And another thing that makes me weep is that I wanted to seek God's bounty.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'As for your saying that the Quraysh will say, "How quickly he remained behind his cousin and abandoned him," you have in me an example: they have said to me, "sorcerer, soothsayer, liar." As for your saying that you want to seek reward from God, are you not content to be to me as Aaron was to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me? As for your saying that you want to seek God's bounty, here are two heavy loads of pepper that came to us from Yemen; sell it and enjoy it, you and Fatimah, until God brings you of His bounty.'
