وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: نَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ:

هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْغِيبَةُ ؟ قَالُوا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ: ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ قَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ ؟ قَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ

✧ Do you know what backbiting is? They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Mentioning your brother in a way he dislikes.' It was said, 'What if my brother actually has what I say?' He said, 'If he has what you say, then you have backbitten him; and if he does not have what you say, then you have slandered him.'
