✧ The angels attend the dying person. If he is a righteous man, they say: 'Come out, O good soul that was in a good body; come out praiseworthy and rejoice in rest, sweet basil, and a Lord who is not angry.' This continues to be said to it until it comes out, then it is ascended with to heaven. Permission is sought for it, and it is said: 'Who is this?' They say: 'So-and-so.' They say: 'Welcome to the good soul that was in a good body; enter praiseworthy.' This continues to be said to it until it is brought before God, Blessed and Exalted. If he is an evil man, they say: 'Come out, O foul soul that was in a foul body; come out blameworthy and rejoice in boiling water and fetid pus, and other torments of its kind paired with it.' He said: It comes out, then it is ascended with to heaven. Permission is sought for it, and it is said: 'So-and-so.' They say: 'No welcome to the foul soul that was in a foul body; return blameworthy, for the gates of heaven will not be opened for you.' Then he goes to the grave. The righteous man is seated in his grave without terror or fear, and it is said to him: 'In what condition were you?' He says: 'In Islam.' It is said to him: 'What do you say about this man?' He says: 'He is the Messenger of God; he came to us with clear proofs from our Lord, and we believed in him and affirmed him.' It is said to him: 'Have you seen God?' He says: 'It is not fitting for anyone to see God.' Then an opening is made for him toward the Fire, and he looks at it, parts of it destroying others. It is said: 'Look at what God has protected you from.' Then an opening is made for him toward Paradise, and he looks at its beauty and what is in it. It is said to him: 'This is what God has prepared for you.' And it is said to him: 'Upon certainty you lived, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised, if God wills.' The evil man is seated in his grave terrified and fearful, and it is said to him: 'In what condition were you?' He says: 'I do not know.' He says: 'What did you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know; I heard the people saying something.' Then an opening is made for him toward Paradise, and he looks at its beauty and what is in it. It is said: 'Look at what God has turned away from you.' Then an opening is made for him toward the Fire, and he looks at it, parts of it destroying others. It is said: 'This is your seat and your abode; upon doubt you lived, and upon it you died, then you will be punished.' This hadith we do not know to be reported from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ except through this route with this chain.
