✧ A Prophet among the Prophets went on a military expedition with his companions and said: 'No man who has built a house but not yet lived in it should accompany me, nor one who has married a woman but not yet consummated the marriage with her, nor one who has a need to return.' He met the enemy at sunset and said: 'O Allah, it is commanded and I am commanded, so hold it back for me until You judge between me and them.' So Allah held it back for him and granted him victory. The spoils of war were gathered, but the fire did not consume them. They used to send fire upon the spoils when they gained them, and it would consume them. Their Prophet said to them: 'You have misappropriated. Let one man from each of your tribes come to me and pledge allegiance to me.' They pledged allegiance to him, and the hand of one of them stuck to his hand. He said: 'Gather your companions, for they have misappropriated, and bring them to me to pledge allegiance to me.' They came to him, and his hand stuck to the hand of two of them. He said: 'You have misappropriated.' They said: 'Yes, we misappropriated images of a cow—meaning horns of a cow made of gold.' He said: 'So he brought it and threw it among the spoils. Then the fire was sent upon them and consumed them.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, Blessed and Exalted, fed us spoils of war as a mercy with which He had mercy on us because of what He knows of our weakness.'
