✧ He came to Fatimah and said to her, "I complain of my chest from drawing water with the bucket." She said, "And I, by God, complain of my hands from grinding with the millstone." Ali said to her, "Go to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him to provide you with a servant." She went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, greeted him, then returned. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "What brought you?" She said, "I came to greet the Messenger of God ﷺ." When she returned to Ali, she said, "By God, I could not speak to the Messenger of God ﷺ out of awe of him." So they both went to him together. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them, "What brought you both? Indeed a need has brought you—I think he said—." Ali said to him, "Yes, O Messenger of God. I complained to Fatimah of my hands from drawing water with the bucket, and she complained to me of her hands from grinding with the millstone, so we came to you to provide us with a servant from what God has given you." He said, "No, but I spend—or I spend it—on the people of the veranda whose livers are folded from hunger; I do not find what to feed them." He said, "When they returned and took to their beds at night, the Messenger of God ﷺ came to them while they were under a khamil—the khamil is a thick cloak—and the Messenger of God ﷺ had equipped her with it and with a cushion stuffed with idhkhir. Ali and Fatimah had felt distressed when he turned them away. When they heard the sound of the Messenger of God ﷺ, they rose to stand, but the Prophet ﷺ said to them, 'Stay in your places.' Then he came and sat on the edge of the khamil and said, 'You came to me to provide you with a servant, but I will guide you—or something similar—to what is better for you than a servant: praise God ten times after every prayer, glorify Him ten times, and magnify Him ten times—or glorify Him thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and magnify Him thirty-four times, making one hundred—when you take to your beds at night.'" Ali said, "I do not know that I ever left it after that." Abdullah b. al-Kawwa said to him, "Not even on the night of Siffin?" Ali said to him, "May God fight you—and not even on the night of Siffin."
