✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a man of good appearance approached, and they mentioned something good about him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed I see on his face a scorch mark from the Fire.” When he came and greeted, the Prophet ﷺ said, “By Allah, did you come — he mentioned a word, I think he said: Did you say to yourself — or — do you consider yourself superior to the people?” He said, “Yes.” When he left, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed there has appeared in my nation — I think he said: a people, this man and his companions among them.” Abu Bakr said, “Shall I not kill him, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Yes.” Abu Bakr went and found him praying in the mosque, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “I found him praying, so I was not able to kill him.” Umar said, “Shall I not kill him?” He said, “Yes.” Umar went and found him praying in the mosque, bowing, so he returned to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I found him praying, so I was not able to kill him.” Ali said, “Shall I not kill him, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Yes, you will kill him if you find him.” Ali went but did not find him.
