حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالَ: نَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ شَاكِيًا، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، وَأَنَا أَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ قَدْ حَضَرَ أَجَلِي فَارْحَمْنِي، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُتَأَخِّرًا فَرَضِّنِي، وَإِنْ كَانَ بَلَاءً فَصَبِّرْنِي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " كَيْفَ قُلْتَ ؟ " عِدْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَضَرَبَنِي بِرِجْلِهِ، فَقَالَ: قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي " أَوْ قَالَ: " اشْفِهِ فَمَا اشْتَكَيْتُ وَجَعِي ذَلِكَ بَعْدُ.

✧ I was ill, and the Prophet ﷺ entered upon me while I was saying: O God, if my appointed time has come, then have mercy on me; if it is delayed, then make me content; and if it is a trial, then give me patience. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'How did you say?' I repeated it to him, and he struck me with his foot and said: 'Say: O God, heal me' or he said: 'Cure him.' I did not complain of that pain afterwards.
