✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his companions, a man came to him wearing travel clothes, weaving through the people until he sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted. He placed his hand on the knee of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, what is Islam?" He said, "Testifying that there is no god but Allah, alone with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting the month of Ramadan, and performing pilgrimage to the House if you are able to make a way to it." He said, "If I do that, am I a Muslim?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken truth." The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Look at him, he asks him and then confirms him, as if he knows more than him," and they did not recognize the man. Then he said, "O Muhammad, what is faith?" He said, "Faith in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, death, resurrection, reckoning, Paradise, the Fire, and all of the divine decree." He said, "If I do that, am I a believer?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken truth." He said, "O Muhammad, what is excellence (ihsan)?" He said, "To fear Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you." He said, "If I do that, am I a doer of excellence?" He said, "Yes." He said, "You have spoken truth." He said, "O Muhammad, when is the Hour?" He said, "The one asked about it knows no more than the questioner." Then the man turned away and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Bring me the man." They followed him, seeking him, but they saw nothing. They returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we followed the man and sought him, but we saw nothing." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That was Gabriel ﷺ who came to you to teach you your religion."
