✧ I was in the house of Abū Ṭalḥa - and he mentioned a group of the Prophet's companions on the day wine was forbidden. Their drink that day was nothing but faḍīkh, made from unripe dates and ripe dates. A crier called out. Some of the people said: 'Go out and see what he is saying.' So I went out, and there was the crier of the Messenger of God ﷺ proclaiming: 'Wine has been forbidden.' So [the wine] was poured out in the streets of Madinah. I said to Abū Ṭalḥa: 'What do you say?' He said: 'Spill it.' So I spilled it. Ḥammād said: 'I do not know whether this is part of the hadith or something Thābit said.' His companions said to him: 'So-and-so was killed on the day of Badr, and so-and-so, while it was still in their bellies.' Then God, blessed and exalted, sent down: 'There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds' [for what they consumed previously].
