✧ Muʿādh b. Jabal used to lead his people in prayer. Ḥarām entered while he wanted to water his palm trees, so he entered the mosque to pray with the people. When he saw Muʿādh—I think he had lengthened the prayer—he shortened his prayer and went to his palm trees to water them. When Muʿādh finished the prayer, or completed it, it was said to him: So-and-so entered the mosque, and when he saw you lengthen the prayer, he shortened his prayer and went to his palm trees to water them. Then Ḥarām came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while Muʿādh was with him and said: O Prophet of God, I wanted to water my palm trees, so I entered the mosque to pray with the people. When he lengthened the prayer, I shortened my prayer and went to my palm trees to water them. He claims that I am a hypocrite. The Messenger of God ﷺ turned to Muʿādh and said: Are you a source of temptation? Are you a source of temptation? Do not lengthen the prayer with them. Recite: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,” “By the sun and its morning brightness,” and the like.
