حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ الْأَزْرَقُ، نَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، نَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ:

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ اسْتَعْمَلَ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ عَلَى جَيْشٍ فِيهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ، فَطَعَنَ النَّاسُ فِي عَمَلِهِ. فَخَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكُمْ طَعَنْتُمْ فِي عَمَلِ أُسَامَةَ وَفِي عَمَلِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ، وَإِنَّ أَبَاهُ كَانَ خَلِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ، وَإِنَّهُ لَخَلِيقٌ لِلْإِمَارَةِ - يَعْنِي: أُسَامَةَ - وَإِنَّهُ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ، وَإِنِّي أُوصِيكُمْ بِهِ - أَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ - خَيْرًا

✧ The Prophet ﷺ appointed Usama b. Zayd over an army in which were Abu Bakr and Umar, and the people criticized his appointment. The Prophet ﷺ gave a sermon and said: "It has reached me that you criticized the appointment of Usama and the appointment of his father before him. Indeed his father was worthy of command, and indeed he (meaning Usama) is worthy of command, and he is among the most beloved of people to me, and I enjoin you to treat him well." I think he said: "with good."
