✧ That 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd Allah and Salim b. 'Abd Allah spoke to 'Abd Allah when [the conflict] was between al-Hajjaj and Ibn al-Zubayr, and they said, 'It does not harm you not to perform Hajj this year, for we fear that there may be fighting among the people or that you may be prevented from reaching the House.' He said, 'If I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did when the disbelievers of Quraysh prevented him from the House: I call you to witness that I have made 'Umrah obligatory upon myself.' So he set out until he came to Dhu al-Hulayfah and made the Talbiyah for 'Umrah. Then he said, 'If I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did, and I was with him.' Then he recited, 'You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemplar.' Then he traveled until he was at the back of al-Bayda', and he said, 'Their matter is but one. If I am prevented from the 'Umrah, I am prevented from the Hajj. I call you to witness that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my 'Umrah.' So he set out until he purchased a sacrificial animal at Qudayd. Then he performed a single Tawaf for both of them at the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and he did not exit the state of ihram from either of them—or from both—until the Day of Sacrifice.
