أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: أَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ مُفَرِّجٍ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ الرَّقِّيُّ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبْدِ الْخَالِقِ الْبَزَّارُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالَ: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: نَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ:

شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ، وَعَلِيًّا ؓ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ، وَعُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ، وَأَنْ يُجْمَعَ بَيْنَهُمَا، يَعْنِي: بَيْنَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا، وَقَالَ: لَبَّيْكَ حَجَّةً وَعُمْرَةً مَعًا، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: أَتُرَانِي أَنْهَى النَّاسَ وَأَنْتَ تَفْعَلُهُ، فَقَالَ: لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَدَعَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِقَوْلِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ

✧ I witnessed Uthman and Ali ؓ between Makkah and Madinah, and Uthman was prohibiting mut'a and that one should combine them, meaning between Hajj and Umrah. When Ali ؓ saw that, he entered ihram for both of them together and said: Labbayk, a Hajj and an Umrah together. Uthman said: Do you think I prohibit the people while you do it? He said: I would not abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the saying of any person.
