✧ Dimam b. Tha'labah, one of the Banu Sa'd b. Bakr, came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was a tough, hairy man with two braids. He hobbled his camel at the gate of the mosque, then entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and stood before him while he was among his companions. He said: 'Which of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Here I am, the son of Abd al-Muttalib.' He said: 'Are you Muhammad?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I will ask you and be harsh in questioning, so do not resent it.' He said: 'Ask whatever appears to you, I will not resent it.' He said: 'I adjure you by God, your God, and the God of those before you, and the God of those after you: did God send you to us as a Messenger?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O God, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by God, your God, and the God of those before you, and the God of those after you: did God command you to order us to cast off these rivals that our fathers worshipped and to worship God without associating anything with Him?' He said: 'O God, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by God, your God, and the God of those before you, and the God of those after you: did God command you that we perform these five prayers?' He said: 'O God, yes.' Then he faced the obligations one by one, naming them to him, until he finished. He said: 'I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I will act upon these obligations, not adding to them nor subtracting from them.' Then he turned away. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'If the man with two braids is truthful, he will enter Paradise.' He went to his camel and untied its hobble, then departed until he came to his people. When they gathered to him, they said: 'What is behind you, O Dimam?' He began to revile al-Lat and al-Uzza. They said: 'Stop, beware of leprosy, beware of elephantiasis, beware of madness.' He said: 'Woe to you, you are only in falsehood. By God, they neither harm nor benefit. God has sent a Messenger and revealed to him a Book and prescribed for him a religion. I have brought you that which he is upon.' By God, by the evening of that day there remained no man or woman in his settlement except as a Muslim. We have never heard of an envoy like Dimam b. Tha'labah.
