✧ We went out with the Commander of the Faithful, Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ, on a day of Eid. Some of his companions asked him: 'O Commander of the Faithful, what do you say about praying on the day of Eid before the imam and after him?' He said: 'He did not answer them anything.' Then another group came and asked him as the previous ones had asked, and he did not answer them. When we reached the prayer, he led the people in prayer and said the takbir seven times and five times, then he gave a sermon to the people, then he descended and mounted. They said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, these are people praying.' He said: 'What could I do? You asked me about the sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ did not pray before it or after it. Whoever wishes may do so, and whoever wishes may leave it. Do you think I should prevent people from praying and thus be like one who prevents a servant from praying?'
