✧ Regarding the words of God, Blessed and Exalted: 'Whatever you cut down of palm trees or left standing on their roots, it was by God's permission, and to disgrace the transgressors' (Qur'an 59:5). He said: 'Linah' means the date palm. 'And to disgrace the transgressors'—he said: They brought them down from their fortresses and were commanded to cut the palm trees. They said: We have cut some, so let us ask the Messenger of God ﷺ: Is there any reward for us in what we cut, and any sin upon us in what we left? So God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: 'Whatever you cut down of palm trees, it was by God's permission; and whatever you left, it was by God's permission.'
