✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent someone to Khaybar—I think it was Abu Bakr—and he returned defeated, he and those with him. The next day, he sent 'Umar, and he returned defeated, calling his companions cowards and they calling him a coward. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'I will give the banner tomorrow to a man who loves God and His Messenger and whom God and His Messenger love. He will not return until God grants victory through him.' The people became eager. He said: 'Where is 'Ali?' It turned out he was suffering from an eye ailment. The Messenger of God ﷺ spat into his eye, then gave him the banner. He waved it, and God granted victory through him.
