✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition in which al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad was present. When they reached the people, they found that they had dispersed, and one man with abundant wealth remained and did not leave. He said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.' Al-Miqdad lunged at him and killed him. One of his companions said to him, 'You killed a man who bears witness that there is no god but Allah? By Allah, I will mention that to the Prophet ﷺ.' When they came to the Prophet, they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, a man bore witness that there is no god but Allah, and al-Miqdad killed him.' He said, 'Summon al-Miqdad for me. O Miqdad, did you kill a man who says "there is no god but Allah"? What will you do about "there is no god but Allah" tomorrow?' Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down: 'O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of Allah, be discerning, and do not say to one who offers you peace'—or 'submission'; Abu Sa'id, meaning Ja'far b. Salama, was uncertain—'you are not a believer, seeking the goods of the life of this world. With Allah are abundant spoils. Thus you were before.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to al-Miqdad, 'He was a believing man who concealed his faith among a disbelieving people, and he disclosed his faith, and you killed him. Likewise, you used to conceal your faith in Makkah before.'
