✧ I will tell you a hadith which it is incumbent upon every Muslim or upon the Muslims to heed.' We said: 'Yes.' He related it to us at the beginning of the day and we forgot it by the end of the day. We came to him and said: 'The hadith you told us, that it is incumbent upon the Muslims to heed, we have forgotten it, so repeat it for us.' He said: 'There is no Muslim servant who commits a sin and Allah takes him to task for it in this world and punishes him for it, but that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is too generous to repeat his punishment on the Day of Resurrection. And no Muslim commits a sin and Allah forgives him for it in this world, but that Allah is too generous to repeat his punishment on the Day of Resurrection for what He has forgiven.' Then he recited this verse: 'And whatever misfortune befalls you is because of what your hands have earned, and He pardons much.'

machine translationAbū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq, al-Khalīl b. Murrah, al-Ḥakam b. ʿAbdullāh al-Naṣrī, Ḥafṣ b. Sulaymān, and Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī Thābit b. Abī Ṣafiyyah narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Juḥayfah, from ʿAlī. There is disagreement about Ḥafṣ b. Sulaymān and Abū Ḥamzah. It was said from Ḥafṣ, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAwn b. Abī Juḥayfah, from his father, from ʿAlī; this statement is an error (wahm) on the part of whoever said it, and the correct report is from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Juḥayfah. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī Sulaymān said, from Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Juḥayfah, as a statement of the Companion (mawqūf); and its attribution to the Prophet (marfūʿ) is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
