✧ When the verse 'And warn your closest kindred' was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Ali, prepare a leg of sheep with a sa' of food, and gather for me Banu Hashim" – at that time they numbered forty men or forty minus one. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the food, placed it among them, and they ate until full, though among them was one who would eat a whole young she-camel with its condiments. Then he took the bowl, and they drank from it until quenched, meaning from the milk. Some of them said: "We have never seen anything like this sorcery" – they thought it was Abu Lahab who said it. He said: "O Ali, prepare a leg of sheep with a sa' of food and prepare a cup of milk." He said: I did so, and they ate as they had eaten the first day and drank as they had drunk the first time, and there remained leftovers just as there had been the first time. He said: "We have never seen sorcery like today." He said: "O Ali, prepare a leg of sheep with a sa' of food and prepare a cup of milk." He said: I did so. He said: "O Ali, gather for me Banu Hashim." So I gathered them, and they ate and drank. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then preempted them and said: "Which of you will settle my debt on my behalf?" He said: I remained silent, and the people remained silent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated the words, and I said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You, O Ali? You, O Ali?"
