✧ "Has any of you seen a dream?" Then whoever God willed would relate it to him. He said: And one morning he said to us: "Two visitors came to me and sent me (on a journey), and they said to me: 'Go.' So I went with them." And al-Muʿtamir said in his hadith: "Two visitors came to me last night and said to me: 'Go.' So I went with them." Then they came upon a man lying down, with another man standing over him holding a rock. He was raising the rock and smashing his head with it, splitting his head open. The rock would roll away, and he would follow it, pick it up, and not return to him until his head had healed and become as it was before. Then he would return to him and do to him as he had done the first time. He said: I said: "Glory be to God! What is this?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So I went with them, and we came upon a man lying on his back, with another man standing over him holding an iron hook. He would come to one side of his face and tear his cheek from his mouth-corner to the back of his neck, and his nostril to the back of his neck, and his eye to the back of his neck. Then he would turn to the other side and do to it as he had done to the first side. He would not finish that side before the first had healed and become as it was. Then he would return and do to him as he had done the first time. He said: I said: "Glory be to God! What is this?" They said: "Go on, go on." So I went on, and we came upon something like the structure of a tannur (oven). ʿAwf said: And I think he said: In it there was clamor and voices of men and women. Flames would come to them from below, and when the flames reached them, they would cry out. He said: I said: "Who are these?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So we went on, and we came upon a river—I think he said—red like blood. In the river there was a man swimming, and on the bank of the river there was a man who had gathered many stones. The swimming man would swim for a while, then come to the one who had gathered the stones, who would open his mouth and put a stone in it. He said: I said: "What is this?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So we went on, and we came upon a man with a hideous appearance, tending a fire and walking around it. He said: I said to them: "What is this?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So we went on, and we came upon a lush meadow containing every kind of spring blossom. In the middle of the meadow stood a tall man, and around him were more children than I had ever seen. I think he said: I said to them: "What is this, or who are these?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So we went on, and we came to a great staircase, the greatest and most beautiful I had ever seen. He said: They said to me: "Climb it." So I climbed, and we came to a city built of bricks of gold and bricks of silver. We came to the gate of the city and asked for it to be opened, and it was opened for us. We entered, and we were met by men half of whose bodies were the most beautiful you could see, and the other half the ugliest you could see. He said: They said to them: "Go and plunge into that river." There was a river flowing across, its water as pure white as milk. So they went and plunged into it, then returned to us with the ugliness gone and in the best of forms. He said: They said to me: "This is the Garden of Eden, and that is your dwelling." He said: My gaze rose upward, and there was a palace like a white cloud. He said: They said to me: "This is your dwelling." I said: "May God bless you both. Let me enter it." They said to me: "Not now, but you will enter it." I said: "I have seen wonders since last night. What is this that I have seen?" They said to me: "We will tell you. The first man you came upon, whose head was being smashed with a rock, is a man who takes the Quran and then abandons it, and sleeps through the prescribed prayer. The man you came upon whose cheek, eye, and nostril were being torn to the back of his neck is a man who leaves his house in the morning and tells a lie that spreads to the horizons. The naked men and women in the structure like a tannur are the adulterers and adulteresses. The man swimming in the river and being fed stones is the consumer of riba (usury). The hideous-looking man tending the fire is the keeper of Hell. The tall man in the meadow is Ibrahim ﷺ. The children around him are every newborn who died upon the fitrah (natural disposition). The people half of whom were beautiful and half ugly are a people who mixed a righteous deed with an evil one, and God, Blessed and Exalted, has forgiven them." [As in the printed edition of Maktabat al-ʿUlum wa-l-Hikam; perhaps the correct reading is "Ibn al-Sabbah," and God knows best.]
