✧ Al-Walīd b. ‘Uqbah met ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. ‘Awf and said, “Why do you not come to the Commander of the Believers and visit him?” ‘Abd al-Raḥmān said to him, “Convey to him from me that I was not absent from Badr, and I did not flee on the day of ‘Aynayn.” This reached ‘Uthmān, and he said, “As for his saying, ‘I was not absent from Badr,’ I stayed behind to care for the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he allotted me my share. Whoever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted a share, it is as if he was present. As for his saying, ‘I did not flee on the day of ‘Aynayn,’ Allah, mighty and majestic, has forgiven all those who fled. So why reproach me for a sin Allah has forgiven?”
