✧ He said to me: "O son of my brother, I prayed for three years before I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: I said: "So where did you turn (in prayer)?" He said: "I used to turn wherever Allah directed me. I would stand in prayer at night as long as Allah willed, and when it was the last part of the night I would throw myself down as if I were a garment, and we were with our maternal uncle. A man said to him: 'Unays is taking your place with your family.' He said: So he said to him: 'My brother Unays, O uncle, as for the good you have done, by Allah you have spoiled it, and as for us, we will not live with you in a land where you are.' He said: And we were with our mother at our herd, and my brother Unays challenged a man to a contest over our herd, and they referred the matter to a man among the soothsayers. Unays kept praising him until he defeated him, so he took his herd and added it to our herd. Then my brother Unays went to Makkah and said: 'I saw there a man who is the most similar of people to you, called the Sabian.' He said: I said: 'I will go and look.' He said: So I came to Makkah and approached a man and said: 'Where is this one called the Sabian?' He said: So he raised his voice and said: 'Sabian! Sabian!' He said: So I was stoned until I was left as if I were such-and-such - a word mentioned by Ibn Abi 'Adi - then I went off and stayed between Makkah and its veils. One night I went out, and there were two women circumambulating, calling upon Yasaf and Na'ilah. He said: I said: 'Marry one of them to the other.' They said: 'Sabian! Sabian!' He said: I said: 'I am a thing like a piece of wood in a thing, except that I do not use a kunyah.' He said: So they went off, and then they came upon the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr coming from the lower part of Makkah. They said: 'This Sabian is between the Ka'bah and its veils.' The Prophet ﷺ came and circumambulated the House and prayed two rak'ahs behind the Maqam. He said: So I came to him. He said: I was the first of people to greet him with the greeting of Islam. He said: I said: 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'And upon you, who are you?' I said: 'I am from Banu Ghifar.' He said: So he placed his hand on his face like this. He said: I said: He disliked the people to whom I attributed myself, so I went to remove his hand. He said: So his companion placed his hand below mine, and he was more knowledgeable than me. He said: So he raised his hand and said: 'How long have you been here?' He said: I said: 'For fifteen (days).' He said: 'What has been your food?' I said: 'The water of Zamzam, and I have not felt any weakness of hunger on my liver, and the folds of my belly have become creased.' He said: 'Indeed it is a food that nourishes and a cure for sickness.' He said: So Abu Bakr said: 'Let me host him tonight.' He said: So he took me to a house in the lower part of Makkah and gave me handfuls of raisins. He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'A land with palm trees has been mentioned to me, so when you hear that we have come to it, come to us.' He said: So I returned to my family. Unays said: 'What did you do?' I said: 'I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam.' He said: 'I have no desire to turn away from your religion' or 'I have no desire away from your religion,' so my brother embraced Islam, and my mother said: 'I have no desire away from the religion of you two,' so she embraced Islam, and some people of our tribe embraced Islam. He said: 'The other half (will embrace Islam) when I meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so we may stipulate conditions for ourselves.'
