✧ News of Abū Dharr used to reach me—a hadith that I desired to meet him for—I think he said—so I met him, and I said: "I was eager to meet you." He said: "May your father be for God, for you have indeed met me, so bring it on." I said: "It used to reach me from you that you claim that the Messenger of God ﷺ told you that God, Blessed and Exalted, loves three and hates three." He said: "Yes, and I do not think that I would lie about my close friend; yes, and I do not think that I would lie about my close friend; yes, and I do not think that I would lie about my close friend." I said: "So who are these three whom God loves?" He said: "A man who goes out in the path of God seeking reward and striving, then meets the enemy and fights." He said: "And you will find it in the revealed Book of God," then he recited this verse: 'Indeed, God loves those who fight in His path in rows as if they were a compact structure.' I said: "And who else?" He said: "And a man who has a bad neighbor who harms him, and he bears his harm patiently and seeks reward until God suffices him or he dies." I said: "And who else?" He said: "And a man who is an unbeliever among a people, and they travel at night until when they are in the last part of the night, exhaustion and sleepiness overcome them, so they dismount and lay down their heads; but he performs ablution and stands to purify himself and prays out of fear of God and desire for what is with Him." I said: "So who are the three whom God hates?" He said: "The arrogant boastful one—and you will find it with you, meaning in the Book of God: 'Indeed, God does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful.'" I said: "And who else?" He said: "The miser who reminds of his favors." I said: "And who else?" He said: "The merchant who swears much," or "the seller who swears much." Yazīd said: "I do not know which of the two he said." I said: "O Abā Dharr, what is wealth?" He said: "What has come in the morning and does not last till evening, and what has come in the evening and does not last till morning." I said: "O Abā Dharr, what is the matter with you and your brothers of Quraysh?" He said: "By God, I will not seek their help in religion, nor will I ask them for worldly things until I meet God and His Messenger. By God, I will not seek their help in religion, nor will I ask them for worldly things until I meet God and His Messenger."
