✧ About the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: 'So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none in the worship of his Lord.' He said: Abu Salih narrated to me, saying: Abd al-Rahman b. Ghanm was in the mosque of Damascus with a group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, among them Mu'adh b. Jabal. Abd al-Rahman b. Ghanm said: 'O people, the thing I fear most for you is the hidden shirk.' Mu'adh said: 'O Allah, forgive.' He said: 'O Mu'adh, have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever fasts for show has committed shirk, whoever gives charity for show has committed shirk, and whoever prays for show has committed shirk?' He said: 'Yes, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse: So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord... and the verse was hard on the people and they were distressed. He said: Shall I relieve you of it? They said: Yes, may Allah relieve you of worry and harm. He said: It is like the verse in Surat al-Rum: 'And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah...' Whoever does a deed for show, it is not recorded for him nor against him; it is neither for him nor against him.'
