✧ There was a king among those before you who entrusted a boy of his to a magician to teach him magic. And between the magician and the king there was a monk. The boy came upon the monk and heard his words, and he was impressed by his manner and his speech. Whenever he came to the magician, the magician said: 'What kept you?' He said: 'My family kept me.' And whenever he came to his family, he sat with the monk and was late, so when he came to his family they beat him. He complained to the monk. The monk said: 'If the magician wants to beat you, say: "My family kept me." And if your family wants to beat you, say: "The magician kept me."' While he was in that situation, one day he came upon a huge, fearsome beast that had blocked the people and they could not pass. He said: 'Today I will know whether the monk is more beloved to Allah or the magician.' He said: 'O Allah, if the affair of the monk is more beloved to You—more pleasing—than the affair of the magician, then kill this beast so that the people may pass.' He threw something at it and killed it, and the people passed. He informed the monk of that. The monk said: 'You are better than me, and you will be tested. If you are tested, do not point to me.' The boy used to heal the blind and the leper. He said: And there was a courtier of the king—meaning a man who used to sit with him—who became blind. He heard about him—meaning he heard about the boy—and came to him with many gifts and said: 'Heal me.' He said: 'I do not heal anyone. If you believe in Allah, I will call upon Allah and He will heal you.' So he believed, and he called upon Allah and He healed him. Then he came to the king—meaning the man who used to come to him—and sat as he used to sit. Someone said to him: 'Who restored your sight?' He said: 'My Lord.' He said: 'I am your lord.' He said: 'No, but my Lord is Allah.' He said: 'Do you have a lord other than me?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: And he kept torturing him until he pointed to the boy. So he sent for him and said: 'Has your magic reached the point that you heal the blind and the leper?' He said: 'I do not heal anyone; none heals except Allah.' He said: 'Do you have a lord other than me?' He said: 'Yes, my Lord and your Lord is Allah.' So he also seized him and tortured him, and he did not cease until he pointed to the monk. The monk was brought, and he said: 'Abandon your religion,' but he refused. So a saw was placed on the middle of his head until his two halves fell to the ground. He said to the blind man: 'Abandon your religion,' but he refused. He said: So a saw was placed on the middle of his head until his two halves fell to the ground. And he said to the boy: 'Abandon your religion,' but he refused. So he sent him with a group to such-and-such a mountain and said: 'When you reach the top with him, if he returns from his religion, then leave him; otherwise throw him down from it.' They went with him, and when they ascended the mountain with him, he said: 'O Allah, suffice me against them however You will.' The mountain shook with them, and the boy came walking to the king. He said: 'What happened to your companions?' He said: 'Allah sufficed me against them.' Then he sent him with others to the sea and said: 'If he returns from his religion, then leave him; otherwise drown him.' They took him out to sea, and the boy said: 'O Allah, suffice me against them however You will,' and they all drowned. The boy came walking until he entered upon the king. He said: 'What happened to your companions?' He said: 'Allah sufficed me against them.' Then he said to the king: 'You will not be able to kill me until you do what I command you. If you do what I command you, you will kill me; otherwise you will not be able to kill me.' He said: 'And what is that?' He said: 'Gather the people in one open plain, then crucify me on a trunk, then take an arrow from my quiver, then say: "In the name of Allah, the Lord of the boy." For if you do that, you will kill me.' He said: So he placed the arrow in the middle of his bow, then shot it, then said: 'In the name of Allah, the Lord of the boy.' The arrow fell on his temple, and the boy placed his hand on the spot of the arrow and died. The people said: 'We believe in the Lord of the boy.' It was said to the king: 'Do you see what you were wary of? By Allah, it has befallen you. The people have all believed.' So he ordered trenches to be dug at the mouths of the streets, and fires were kindled in them. He said: 'Whoever returns from his religion, leave him; otherwise throw him into it.' They began pushing one another into it. Then a woman came with her infant son whom she was nursing, and it was as if she hesitated to fall into it. The boy said to her: 'O mother, be patient, for you are upon the truth.'
